We're often asked "Which is the best cheese making kit for beginners?".
The quick answer is one that helps you make your first cheese!
Mozzarella is just about the simplest cheese to begin with and you could get everything you need and follow our video to make your own lovely Mozz.
However, a cheaper and easier way to 'test' whether you'll enjoy making cheese is to buy a cheesemaking kit.
Your DIY cheese making kit should contain everything you produce a several batches of Mozzarella (or Ricotta) easily and successfully, using only store-bought milk.
The table below reviews five of the best selling kits on Amazon.com. We give our opinion on which cheesemaking kit is value for money and which might leave you feeling a bit cheated!
Cheese Kit | Review | Kit Contents | Price | Our Rating |
---|---|---|---|---|
Standing Stone Farms Basic Beginner Cheesemaking Kit | Standing Stone Farms offer a more expensive kit, but it is quite a bit more professional than the others on the list. With liquid vegetarian rennet for accurate measuring (and no frustrating dissolving required) and calcium chloride to get more curds from store-bought milk, this kit is stand out! They've gone that little bit further even in the instructions - you can make seven different cheeses with this one kit! |

Ricki's Mozzarella & Ricotta Cheesemaking Kit | This kit comes from the 'queen of cheesemaking' and offers amazing value. With the 10 vegetarian rennet tablets you can make a huge 30 x 1lb batches of cheese with Ricki's Cheesemaking kit. The only criticism is for the poor clarity of the instructions. Click here to use ours instead for great results. |

Roaring Brook Mozzarella Cheesemaking Kit | One word: MEAN! Roaring Brook's mozzarella kit is the meanest of all the kits reviewed here. It is the cheesy Scrooge to Ricki's Santa. Yes, it's cheaper you get a pair of gloves (making mozzarella gets hot on the hands) but only ONE rennet tablet to make four batches of cheese. If you enjoy this kit, you'll want to buy more rennet tablets - so, in the end, you won't save cash. Put your money elsewhere people! |

Cultures for Health Mozzarella and Ricotta Cheesemaking Kit | Although Cultures for Health have been around some time, they are relatively new to the cheesemaking kit market. Their offering with this kit is, erm, ok. it's just a bit, meh! You can't make as much cheese as with Ricki's kit, nor do you get the quality of supplies that come with the Standing Stone Farms kit. You do get many years' of experience from the company behind it, but... that's probably not enough to make this kit the one to buy. |
| $$ | |
Boska Holland Fresh Mozzarella Cheesemaker Kit | This is a nice, interesting variation on the home cheesemaking kit. The Boska Holland kit is packaged in a reusable glass 'kilner'-style jar, which makes it aesthetically very pleasing. Unfortunately the kit as a whole suffers somewhat from being like the Cultures for Health kit. It's neither very generous nor very comprehensive. Worse for Boska Holland: it's quite a bit more expensive than the Cultures for Health kit too. If you've the money to spend on the best cheesemaking kit, then stick with the Standing Stone Farms version. |

You'll see from our chart that there really are only two contenders for the title of "Best cheesemaking kit in 2016".
Most of the field is frustratingly bland when com[parteed to our two champions
The Standing Stone Farms Beginner Cheesemaking Kit has really great quality ingredients, is a really versatile kit and will help you make no less than seven different types of cheese.
Standing Stones' kit is the most expensive that we've reviewed, but it still grabs a worthy 4.5 stars because it works so hard to make your first cheesemaking experience a great one.
In the end though, Ricki's Mozzarella and Ricotta Cheesemaking Kit edged Standing Stones out to win our only five-star award in this 2016 cheese making kit review.
They won by simply providing great value - no other kit gives the same quantity of ingredients that this one does and the many years of being 'queen of cheesemaking' make Ricki Carroll well placed to know what to deliver to make your first steps into cheese making a success.
